Rotarians,

Peace and the prevention and resolution of conflicts hold significant importance in the Rotary calendar during the month of February. This is attributed to the commemoration of the inaugural Rotary meeting on February 23, 1905, now recognized as World Understanding and Peace Day.

This historic gathering laid the foundation for our organization's profound dedication to promoting World Understanding and Peace. In recognition of this commitment, February 23rd is now designated as World Understanding and Peace Day within the Rotary community.

In a world that often faces complex challenges, Rotary's emphasis on peace is more vital than ever. It serves as a beacon, guiding us to actively engage in conflict prevention and resolution, contributing to the betterment of our global community.

As members of the Rotary Club of Idaho Falls, let us use this month to renew our commitment to the ideals of peace and understanding. Through our collective efforts, we can continue to make a positive impact and work towards a more harmonious world.

Thank you for your dedication to Rotary's principles and for being ambassadors of peace within our community and beyond.

Update From Arthur Kull, Chair International Service

Fellow Rotarians,

Here is an update on the two projects our Club is working on with the Pocatello Rotary Club’s World Service Committee.

“The joint World Service Committees of Pocatello and Idaho Falls are committed to fund two new projects, this time in Peru:

1. Tree Planting Project. “Rotarians to Work Together to plant Polylepsis trees in Peru to Honor Sacred Apu Anccara Mountain (Machu Picchu Rotary Club: Polylepsis trees grow bets above 8,000 ft) The Idaho Rotary team plans to work with the Machu Picchu Rotary Club to plant trees in the high Andes mountains near Machu Picchu, to combat deforestation and promote sustainable development. In a joint effort to honor the natural beauty and spiritual significance of Apu Anccara Mountain, the local Rotary Club recently organized a tree-planting project in the high Andean mountains of Peru. Apu Anccara is located in the Cusco region of Peru, not far from Machu Picchu. It is considered sacred by the local people and is believed to be home to a variety of spirits and deities. The mountain is also a powerful spiritual site, often visited by pilgrims who come to pray and make offerings.”

2. Lima Cancer Center Family Housing Project (Lima Rotary Club Pango): Peru has only one cancer treatment hospital. A compassionate Catholic priest has taken it upon himself to address the hardship faced by poor families traveling from distant villages for their loved ones’ treatment in Lima. He sponsors three homes that offer free accommodations to these families. There is a need to maintain and improve these facilities as well as supplying them with bedding supplies, hygiene products and food items.”

Update on MAC Concessions Service Project

Our Club has now completed 3 of our 5 service projects at the Mountain America Center.

Three different groups of our members have served in the ToPo Tato Food Concessions Booth, with Brandi Newton, Kristin Sanger and Elaine Gray serving as the Team Leader. Thank you - we appreciate your willingness to serve!

Our next MAC Concessions service project is scheduled for February 9, 2024 with Gray Augustus serving as the Team Leader. Our 5th and final service project will be on February 16, 2024 and we could use a few more members to serve. If you have not yet participated, please sign up to serve at this week's meeting. Funds raised will benefit our Scholarship Program.
